Get to Know Arbol-Us: Marc Castejón, Engineering Manager

Today, we’re excited to introduce you to Marc Castejón, Engineering Manager from our Engineering & Data Science team. From being the very first developer in the department to helping foster a culture of innovation, Marc embodies the growth and opportunity that define life at Arbolus.

What inspired you to join Arbolus, and what do you enjoy most about working here?

I joined originally because the idea of being the first developer in a fresh technology department sounded exciting and unique, a great opportunity to experience a company grow first-hand.

What I enjoyed the most about working here is the people, being in an environment where people are approachable and relatable, no matter the role or seniority.

How would you describe the company culture in one word, and why?

Bold. From my experience, Arbolus has been a great place to seize the opportunity and take risks, the company will be happy to support you. Here I’ve got to learn many new skills and grow massively as a professional.

Arbolus has been a great journey so far. I joined as a Backend Developer, and after years of a roller coaster of experiences and emotions, I’ve learned React, management, hiring, and many other diverse skills. But most importantly, I’ve met an incredible range of amazing people.

What does a typical day look like in your role?

Meetings. 8 years ago, when I was learning how to make cool websites, I never expected to spend so much time interviewing people and reading legal contracts. Jokes aside, I spend most of my time and energy making sure the team and the department are well supported and able to work comfortably and smoothly.

What’s your favourite tradition or event at Arbolus?

On the events side, I love the hackathons we do in the tech team. They are fun and creative, a great moment to experiment, learn and work with people and tools that you usually never do.

Also, one period I loved is a month we called “Pilot” where we mixed engineering teams with people from other departments who use the application we develop. We had a constant feedback loop with our users when developing the product; it's super cool to see in real time how people use the software you just built.

Can you share a fun or surprising fact about yourself that most of your colleagues might not know?

The reason I learnt coding is that I wanted to develop video games. My first experience with it was modifying some Minecraft files back when I was around 15.

If you could trade roles at work for a day, which role would you choose?

Delivery Associate. I wonder how good I would be at finding experts given my product and business knowledge, along with my personality.
